Showcasing at Cicada x Tech23 2025, Australia’s Biggest Deep Tech Festival
We’re honoured to share that BioCarbon has been selected as one of the Tech23 at Cicada x Tech23, Australia’s biggest deep tech event, taking place on 10th September 2025 in Sydney.
Cicada x Tech23 is more than a showcase — it’s a movement. A movement to champion 23 visionary founders, connect them with the right people, and accelerate their journey from lab to market, from startup to scale. We’re proud to be among the 2025 Tech23 cohort, which is tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges — from cancer diagnostics and synthetic biology to precision agriculture, quantum satellite navigation, and green steel.
GreenChar: Powering the Shift to Sustainable Steel
At BioCarbon, we’re decarbonising heavy industry through GreenChar, a renewable carbon product developed using our patent-pending process that eliminates the economic and technical limitations of charcoal use in steelmaking. GreenChar has already been successfully trialled at 100% replacement in two electric arc furnaces (EAFs).
We’re currently progressing approvals for our first commercial-scale facility, in partnership with a major steelmaker. This joint venture plant will produce 8,000 tonnes of GreenChar annually, displacing fossil coke and avoiding 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year — all without added cost or process changes for users.
Global Recognition of Impact
Being selected as one of the Tech23 is a powerful acknowledgment of the work of the BioCarbon team, led by Chad Sheppeard, Kannappar Mukunthan, and John Mellowes. This recognition joins a growing list of accolades that reflect the impact and innovation behind our technology:
Each milestone reflects our commitment to building a more sustainable, secure, and sovereign future through clean industrial technology.
